Archaeological finds like the Royal Game of Ur — a race game played with dice on a distinctively shaped board, recovered from royal graves in ancient Mesopotamia — show the same design pattern showing up independently in multiple ancient cultures: move your own pieces along a shared track toward a goal, faster if the dice favor you, but still bounded by real decisions about which piece to advance at each turn. That "strategy layered on managed randomness" pattern is a genuinely different design lineage from chess and Go's determinism, and it's the one that most directly anticipates how modern dice- and card-driven strategy games are built.
What's notable is that this template hasn't gone anywhere in the intervening millennia — it simply kept getting rebuilt in new forms. A worker-placement game with a shuffled deck of event cards, a deckbuilder where the draw order genuinely matters, a racing game with a spinner: all of them are, structurally, the same strategy-over-managed-chance core as a race game played on a board recovered from a burial chamber, just wrapped in a different theme and a more elaborate rulebook.
Two lineages, one modern hobby
