BOARDBOUT

🎲 Player-Count Matcher

Tell it how many people showed up, and it surfaces well-known games that actually suit that headcount — ranked by how well each one fits, not just whether the box technically allows it.

Just the headcount for tonight — the tool does the rest.

Why “allowed” and “good” aren’t the same

Most game boxes print a min/max player count, but that range hides a lot. A game built around tight resource competition can turn sluggish with too many players at the table, and a deduction or bluffing game can fall flat with too few. The count printed on the lid tells you what’s technically possible, not what plays best.

This tool starts from that published range, then layers in the count (or counts) each game is widely regarded as shining at, so you can tell “plays fine” apart from “this is when it’s really good.”

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the fit score calculated?

Every game in our curated list has a published player range and one or more counts it's widely regarded as best at. A count inside the range scores 100 if it matches a best count, and loses 20 points for each step away from the nearest one, down to a floor of 40 — so 'technically playable' never reads the same as 'shines at this count'.

Why doesn't a game show up at a count the box allows?

The matcher only lists games whose typical published range actually covers your number. If a game needs 3–4 and you enter 2, it's excluded rather than shown with a misleading low score — some games only work with an expansion at other counts, which is worth checking on the box.

Do expansions change these ranges?

Yes — several well-known games extend their player count with an official expansion (a 5–6 player extension is common). This tool covers the base game's published range; check your specific box and any expansions you own for the exact ceiling.

Is this list exhaustive?

No — it's a curated set of widely-owned games to get you a quick answer fast. If your collection has something not listed here, its own box will state a min/max player count you can compare directly against your headcount.

A starting point, not gospel — check the box and rulebook for a specific edition, since expansions can widen a game's player range.
