Organizing a Growing Board Game Collection
Most people who fall into the hobby seriously end up with the same problem eventually: a modest shelf of a dozen games grows, one purchase and one gift at a time, into a genuine storage challenge. Unlike books, board game boxes are irregular, often oversized, and rarely designed with shelf efficiency in mind — which makes "just find some shelf space" a much less trivial task than it sounds.
Board games are a spine-out storage problem
Like books, board games are almost always stored spine-out, so the number that actually matters for planning shelf space isn't the box's full footprint — it's the width of its narrow edge. A slim card-game box might have a two-centimetre spine; a mid-size Euro game with a sizeable insert commonly runs five to eight centimetres; and a large, component-heavy game can easily reach ten centimetres or more. Averaging across your actual collection, rather than guessing, makes any storage plan far more accurate.
The arithmetic of shelf planning
Once you know roughly how wide your average box is, planning shelf space is straightforward multiplication and division, done in the right order:
- Total linear width needed = number of games × average box width.
- Shelves needed = total width ÷ shelf width, rounded up to a whole shelf (you can't buy a fraction of one).
- Storage units needed = shelves needed ÷ shelves per unit, again rounded up.
The rounding at each step matters: a collection that mathematically needs 2.3 shelves genuinely needs 3 real shelves, and that third shelf is mostly, but not entirely, empty. That leftover space — the spare capacity — is worth calculating deliberately, because it tells you exactly how much room you have before the next storage purchase becomes necessary.
A worked example
Take a collection of 85 games, averaging 6.4 centimetres of spine width each, on shelves 90 centimetres wide, with 5 shelves per storage unit. The total linear width needed comes out to 544 centimetres. Divided by the 90-centimetre shelf width and rounded up, that's 7 shelves. Divided by 5 shelves per unit and rounded up again, that's 2 full storage units. The spare capacity — the leftover room across those 7 shelves once the 544 centimetres of actual games are accounted for — comes out to 86 centimetres, or roughly enough room for another 13 games at the same average width before a third unit becomes necessary.
That 86-centimetre figure is the part a rough guess almost never gets right. It's easy to eyeball “about two shelves free” and be off by a shelf's worth of games in either direction; running the actual division tells you precisely how much slack you're working with, which matters a lot when you're deciding whether the next few purchases fit the current setup or force a new unit.
Handling the outliers
Every serious collection has a handful of boxes that blow the average apart: an oversized dungeon-crawler with a mountain of miniatures, or a legacy game shipped in an unusually deep box. Rather than letting one or two huge boxes distort your average-width figure for the whole collection, it's more accurate to set those aside, measure them individually, and add their width to your total by hand. Continuing the worked example above: if that 85-game collection includes three unusually deep boxes at 14 centimetres each (rather than the 6.4-centimetre average), setting them aside and adding their combined 42 centimetres by hand brings the true total width to 586 centimetres instead of the flat 544 the average alone would suggest — enough to matter for whether that spare 86 centimetres of capacity is real or optimistic. The rest of your collection, which is probably far more uniform, can still be planned with a single reasonable average; it's only the true outliers that deserve individual measurement.
A good rule of thumb for deciding what counts as an outlier worth pulling out: if a box is roughly twice your collection's average width or more, measure it individually rather than letting it hide inside the average. Below that threshold, folding it into the average sample is usually close enough that the extra precision isn't worth the effort.
Planning for growth, not just for today
If you're actively still buying games — and most people in the hobby are — it's worth running the numbers for a slightly higher game count than you currently own, rather than exactly your current total. That turns your spare-capacity figure into deliberate headroom: instead of needing a new shelving calculation every time a new box arrives, you'll have a rough sense of how many more games fit before you need to expand again.
Measuring your own average without a full inventory
You don't need to individually measure every box to get a usable average width. A reasonable shortcut: measure ten to fifteen games that feel roughly representative of your collection's overall mix — not just the ones nearest to hand, which tend to skew toward whatever you played most recently — and average those. For a collection with a wide spread of box sizes, it's worth deliberately including a few small card-game boxes and a couple of larger ones in that sample rather than only measuring mid-size Euro boxes, since a sample that's accidentally uniform will underestimate the true average for a genuinely mixed shelf.
Doing the math once instead of by feel
None of this arithmetic is hard on its own, but doing it correctly — average width, rounding up at each stage, accounting for outliers — is easy to get slightly wrong by eyeballing a shelf. Organizing beyond raw shelf width
Shelf math answers the "will it fit" question, but a growing collection usually benefits from a second layer of organization on top of it: some kind of grouping that makes browsing the shelf fast rather than just possible. Grouping by player count, by roughly how long a session runs, or by weight and complexity are all reasonable schemes, and which one helps most depends on how your group actually decides what to play — a household that usually picks based on "how much time do we have" benefits from grouping by playtime, while a household that usually picks based on "how many of us are here tonight" benefits more from grouping by player count. There's no single correct scheme; the right one is whichever answers the question your group actually asks most often when standing in front of the shelf.
Keeping an inventory beyond the shelf
Shelf math tells you whether a collection physically fits; it doesn't tell you what's actually in it, which becomes its own problem well before a collection gets large enough to need a second storage unit. A simple running list — title, box width, and maybe a rough playtime and player-count range — pays off in a few concrete ways. It makes the average-width measurement described above something you only have to do once and then update incrementally, rather than re-measuring the whole shelf every time someone asks how many games you own. It also catches duplicate purchases before they happen, which is a more common problem than it sounds once a collection is large enough that nobody can hold the full contents of the shelf in their head. And it's the fastest way to answer “do you have anything for six people that takes under an hour” without physically scanning every spine.
None of this needs to be elaborate. A spreadsheet with one row per game is enough for most collections; the value comes from keeping it updated at the moment a game arrives or leaves the shelf, not from the sophistication of the tool doing the tracking.
A note on where you store it
Shelf math aside, where a collection lives matters almost as much as how much room it takes up. Direct sunlight fades box art over years of exposure, and a damp basement or garage can warp cardboard components and encourage mould in a way that's much harder to fix than a shelving shortfall. A dry, temperature-stable room with indirect light is worth prioritising over raw square footage if you're choosing between two possible storage spots for a collection you actually care about keeping in good shape.
It's also worth thinking about weight, not just width, once a collection reaches several dozen boxes. A fully loaded shelf of component-heavy games can be surprisingly heavy, and not every piece of furniture marketed for books or decor is rated to carry it safely over years of use — a shelving unit built for the linear-width math above should also be sturdy enough for the actual weight sitting on it.
